Data Governance · Microsoft PurviewFabricAzure

Know what data you have, what it means, and who can touch it.

Microsoft Purview puts a catalog, lineage, classification, and access policy over your whole estate - Fabric, Azure, and beyond. We implement it so governance is something the platform enforces, not something a committee requests.

The four jobs

What Purview actually does for you

Governance tends to fail as policy documents. It works as platform behavior — four capabilities that run whether or not anyone remembers the policy.

Catalog

Every dataset registered, described, and searchable. People find governed data before they rebuild it.

Classification

Sensitive data — personal, financial, commercial — labelled automatically, so protection follows the data wherever it's copied.

Lineage

Where every number comes from, source to dashboard. Impact analysis before a change instead of an outage after one.

Access policy

Who sees what, decided once by policy and enforced everywhere — including by AI agents asking on a user's behalf.

One catalog, two estates

The same governance, wherever your data runs

This service is shared between our Fabric and Azure practices deliberately — one Purview implementation should cover both, or you end up governing the estate in halves.

Governing the lakehouse

Fabric items — lakehouses, warehouses, semantic models, reports — register in Purview automatically. The work is making the metadata meaningful: domains, owners, endorsement, and sensitivity labels that flow into Power BI.

  • Domain and workspace structure mapped to business ownership
  • Endorsement rules — what "certified" means and who grants it
  • Sensitivity labels inherited from OneLake through to report export
  • Lineage from pipeline to visual, kept accurate as the estate grows
How we implement it

Map first, then govern what matters most

01Scan & map

Connect the sources and let Purview build the inventory. Most organizations find data they forgot they had.

02Classify & prioritize

Find where sensitive data actually lives, and rank domains by risk and by how many decisions depend on them.

03Govern the top tier

Owners, glossary, quality expectations, and access policy for the datasets that matter most — not all of them at once.

04Make it routine

Stewardship roles and a review cadence with your team, so the catalog stays true after we leave.

Purview doesn't create governance. It enforces governance you've decided on.

The tool is the easy half. The decisions — who owns customer data, what "restricted" means, who approves access — are the hard half, and no scanner makes them for you. Our implementation includes facilitating those decisions, because a catalog full of unowned data is just a better-organized mess.
